Dr Berg has gone to great lengths to package a study that reveals both his vast experience with identifying and dealing with problems that manifest themselves in a noisy soul. Drawing from both case history and the Bible, he reveals the truths of God's Word according to the context of possible scenarios that many struggle with in this age of temptation and humanistic thinking. Personally, this study series has highlighted areas in my life that needed adjusting. I thought my life was in check and within God's keeping. However, the fruits of this practical study forced me to admit that I needed to make serious adjustment in some areas, which I did, and now those close to me are thankful. In like fashion, our entire family can testify that this study has broadened their knowledge of the Word and its practical use in their lives. I have always had a tongue in cheek attitude towards "Christian psychologists." However, I believe Dr Berg is one of the few that has the skill in this presentation to be able to draw from the Bible a practical, balanced, in-context solution to what many folk today would consider to be irreversible problems they find themselves and others in. I have no hesitation at all recommending this study to folks who are walking in the valley of despair to those atop the mountain.

Dr. Berg’s style of writing is very practical and memorable. Let me share a few of my favourite quotes from the notes. •"If God is the biggest thing in your life, you don’t need anything else, nor do you want it. He is more than enough." •"We are seeking satisfaction in knowing what is going on and why. Our satisfaction, however, must come from knowing who is at work in all these things." •" . . . there are no new sins that are not addressed in the Scriptures. The canon of problems was closed when the canon of Scripture was closed." These materials have numerous applications. They would be beneficial in a Sunday school or discipleship class. Pastors may find certain lectures useful in counseling or in helping to restore someone who is struggling. Couples and families would profit by working through the lessons together. Individual believers who desire to deepen their walk with the Lord would find blessing and benefit in these resources as well.

I purchased a copy of Quieting a Noisy Soul not long after we returned from Papua New Guinea in November 2006 (we had been missionaries there since 1992). Since then we have used the material ourselves, and on a number of occasions we have gone through it with others who have suffered much from "noise in the soul." For anybody who will take the principles presented in the material seriously there is great encouragement and hope for lasting change. Bro Jim Berg has a wealth of experience in dealing with people who struggle in the area of addictions, defeat, discouragement and depression. This well thought out and well presented material would be an asset to anyone either struggling themselves in these areas, or for those wanting to help others overcome in any of these areas. I can highly recommend this material for anyone looking for a useful ministry tool to have on hand to help the Lord's people through some of the more difficult and discouraging battles of the Christian life.
